Led Modules » Principle of operations
Principle of operation of LED diode is based on recombination of free charge carriers (radial recombination). This phenomenon occurs in semi - conductors when electrons passing from higher energetic level to lower are conserving their pseudo momentum. This is so called “simple passage”. During this passage, energy of the electron is transformed into one quantum of electromagnetic radiation. This kind of passages are dominant in semi - conductors with a simple energy band model, in which the minimum of the conduction band and top of valence band are described by the same momentum value.
Luminescence is a physical phenomenon in which energy is radiated by means of exciting factor which for some wavelengths is larger then emitted by this substance temperature radiation. In LED diode we have so called electro - luminescence in which it is electrical current which excites, sometimes electrical field. The most efficient electro luminescence occurs as a result of free charge carriers recombination in a p-n junction if it is polarized in a conducting direction. Light intensity depends on current value and this dependence is linear in a wide scope of currents.
